This is a quiet problem. The pet category looks easy from the outside. It isn't.

This is the framing nobody else writes about. The buyer is human. The user is the pet. The buyer can't ask "does this feel right around your chest." They have to predict it.
The American Pet Products Association puts US pet industry spend at $158 billion in 2024, with $165 billion projected for 2026. The traffic is huge. So is the doubt.
A buyer shopping a $90 harness for a Standard Poodle puppy asks four questions. Will it fit at 22 inches today and 28 inches in three months. Will the front clip rub the shoulder when she pulls. Is the buckle plastic or metal. Has anyone with the same breed bought it and stayed. A clean studio shot answers none of them.
Baymard found that 42 percent of buyers try to gauge scale from product images, and 28 percent of major sites ship no in-scale images. The proxy buyer feels this twice. They can't gauge the scale themselves and they can't ask the user. They guess by leaving.

For beds: real pet on the bed. A 12-pound cat in the small. A 65-pound Shepherd stretched flat in the large. The buyer needs to see how much bed is left around the body.
For crates: the dog inside at full standing height with an inch of clearance. A real customer's pet, not a stock dog.
For carriers: the cat or small dog with the door open and the head out. Buyers want to know if the pet looks crammed.
This block is the cheapest to ship and the most often missed.
The second block is geometry. Most pet brands skip it because the category looks "small." The geometry SKUs are anything the buyer measures their home for.
Crates. Carriers. Large dog beds. Cat trees. Aquariums and aquarium stands. Litter boxes that take real floor space. The buyer's question is the same every time: will this fit in my apartment.

The fourth block is the spec sheet, written for a worried owner instead of a parts catalog.
For a harness: webbing material, hardware (steel D-ring vs plastic clip), chew resistance, reflective stitching, weight load, warranty. "Steel D-ring rated to 600 pounds, holds a strong puller."
For a bed: cover material, fill, cover removable and machine washable, edge support height. "Removable cover, machine wash cold, holds shape after 50 cycles."
For a crate: panel gauge, door latch, ventilation, airline approved or not.
For toys and chews: tested for which size dog, supervised vs unsupervised, choke risk. The buyer is the proxy. They scan for the thing that goes wrong.
Specs without context are decorations. Specs paired with a use case sell.
Not every pet SKU needs the full four-block treatment. The lift is largest on the geometry-driven and the proxy-buyer-driven SKUs.

If the buyer would measure their home, their pet, or their car before buying, the SKU needs the geometry block. If not, ship clean photos and tight specs.
Pick the SKU with the most size-related returns. Probably a harness, a crate, or a large bed.
