If you sell home decor online, you've watched the same pattern for years. Traffic comes in. Buyers click around. They add the rug to the cart. Then they leave to "check the room" and never come back. The product looked great in the photo. The buyer just couldn't tell how big it was, what it would feel like, or whether it would clash with the couch.
That gap is the whole problem.
Home decor converts at about 1.4 percent on average, the second lowest rate in retail ecommerce, because buyers can't judge scale or material from a white-background photo. The product pages that close that gap ship three things. A real photo of the product in a styled room. An AR placement on mobile that maps to the buyer's actual space. A clear size reference inside the photo, like a six-foot model or a measured object. Furniture brands that have shipped this combination report large conversion lifts. EQ3 saw a 112 percent conversion lift on shoppers who used web-AR, with two times the average order value. DFS, the UK's largest furniture retailer, saw a 112 percent conversion lift and a 106 percent revenue per visit lift for the same buyer behavior.
The data is consistent. The fix is not.
Firework's 2026 home decor statistics report puts the category's average conversion rate at 1.4 percent, second only to luxury at the bottom of the table. The reason isn't price. Plenty of categories with higher prices convert better. The reason is uncertainty.
A buyer looking at a $300 floor lamp wants to know three things. How tall is it really, next to my couch. What does the brass actually look like in person. Does the shade glow warm or cold. A photo on a seamless white sweep answers none of those questions. The buyer guesses, gets nervous, and bounces.
Baymard's research backs this up. 42 percent of users try to gauge the overall scale and size of a product from its images, and 28 percent of major sites do not provide any in-scale images at all. That's almost a third of large brands shipping a page where the buyer's first question gets no answer.
If you're at 1.4 percent and your photos don't show scale, you're not losing buyers to price. You're losing them to doubt.
The first fix is the cheapest. Stop shooting only on white. Shoot the product in a real room.
A floor lamp next to a sofa. A rug under a coffee table. A mirror above a credenza. The room itself is the size reference. The buyer sees the lamp shoulder-to-shoulder with a couch they can mentally measure against, and the question of "how tall" answers itself.
This fix doesn't need 3D. A photographer and a styled set will do. Most premium home goods brands already shoot lifestyle photography for ads. The fix is making sure those lifestyle frames live on the product page as the lead image. The white-background hero gets demoted.
The white-background photo still belongs on the page. It's the cleanest reference for color and shape. It just shouldn't be the lead. Lead with the room.
The second fix is AR on mobile. Rugs, lamps, mirrors, side tables, art. Anything the buyer needs to see in their actual space.
EQ3 is the cleanest case. The brand sells contemporary furniture and home goods, and they shipped web-AR through Cylindo on their mobile product pages. Buyers who used the AR placement converted 112 percent higher than non-AR buyers, with three times the conversion rate on mobile and two times the average order value. That's not a small effect. That's a different business.
DFS, on a different platform with Vertebrae, saw the same pattern. 112 percent conversion lift, 106 percent revenue per visit lift, and a 22x return on the AR investment.
The reason both brands saw the same number isn't a coincidence. AR closes the same buyer question for every room-scale product. Will it fit. Will it look right. The buyer holds up their phone, sees the lamp on their actual floor, and either decides yes or no in 30 seconds. There's no more guessing.
The technical lift is small now. Shopify's Hydrogen ModelViewer component wraps Google's model-viewer, which handles AR placement on iOS and Android natively from a USDZ or GLB file. If you have a clean 3D model, you have AR.
If you don't have a 3D model and don't want to commission one, the Gaussian splat capture path is faster. Eight phone photos in, splat out. Good enough for AR placement on most home goods.
The third fix is the smallest and most underused. Put a size reference inside one of the product photos.
A six-foot model standing next to the floor lamp. A coffee cup on the rug. A book on the side table. A hand on the mirror. The buyer's brain locks the size of the reference object instantly, and the question of "how big" gets answered in the first second of looking at the photo.
This works because 42 percent of buyers actively try to grasp scale from images. They're already doing the work. The reference object meets them where they are.
The cheapest version is to add one frame to the existing shoot. Not a new campaign. One frame in the same set, with a person or a common object visible in the same plane as the product. That frame becomes the second image in the gallery, right after the room shot.
Three things look like they should help and don't.
Rotating the product on a white turntable. The 360 spin on a white background tells the buyer nothing about scale or context. It just shows the back of the product. If the back is interesting, fine. Most home goods backs aren't.
A pure white-background 3D viewer with no AR. The buyer can rotate, zoom, and still has no idea how big it is or how it'll look at home. The white sweep is the problem, not the lack of interactivity.
A spec dump without a scene. Listing dimensions in a table is necessary but not sufficient. Most buyers won't pull out a tape measure to convert "26 inches tall" into "next to my couch." They want to see it next to a couch.

The hard part isn't the tools. It's running the test cleanly without changing five things at once.

The reason this works in four weeks is that no single piece is a project. Each step is one photographer day, one developer day, or one capture session. The discipline is shipping one at a time so you can attribute the lift.
Not every product in the catalog needs this treatment. The lift is largest on products where the buyer's question is spatial.
Rugs. Buyers want to know how it'll look under the couch and whether it'll clash with the floor. AR placement and an in-room photo close that gap.
Floor lamps and table lamps. Scale is everything. A 60-inch floor lamp is comically tall in a small living room. A buyer can't tell from a white-background photo. AR fixes it in 30 seconds.
Mirrors. Same problem. A 36-inch round mirror looks small on a dining wall and huge on a powder-room wall. Place it virtually, decide.
Wall art and large prints. The buyer's question is "will this fill the space above the sofa." AR is the answer.
Side tables, accent chairs, ottomans. Scale relative to the existing room.
Where the lift is weaker: small accessories under 50 dollars. A candle holder, a small vase, a coaster set, a single throw pillow. The buyer's question on those is aesthetic, not spatial. Great photography wins those products. AR is overkill.
A reasonable rule. If the buyer would measure their room before buying it, the product needs AR. If they wouldn't, it doesn't.
If you're staring at a 1.4 percent conversion rate on a category that should be doing twice that, the leak isn't the price or the ad copy. It's the page. The buyer can't see the product in their space, can't judge the scale, and can't trust the material. The three fixes above close that gap one at a time.
